Taurous deoxycholic acid (TUDCA) is ursodeoxycholic acid combined with a taurine molecule.
Tauroursodeoxycholic acid is more effective in increasing bile concentrations of ursodeoxycholic acid (as well as lowering effects such as decreasing liver enzyme levels) than ursodeoxycholic acid alone. Presumably, this is due to the increased bioavailability of the taurine group. The process of conjugation of ursodeoxycholic acid with taurine is a rate-limiting step, and this rate-limiting step is eliminated by taking tauroursodeoxycholic acid.

Gallstones (made up of cholesterol) can be treated in a litholytic manner with bile acids, dissolving them to a size where they can be passed.

Cholesterol gallstones account for approximately 75% of all hepatic gallstones (in Western countries) and are the only form of gallstones that can be dissolved by bile acids.

Gallstones may become opaque, indicating their inability to dissolve. The opacity is due to calcium deposition in the cholesterol gallstone, making it resistant to the cholelitholytic effects of bile acids. Opaque gallstones are either black (about 20% of the total, composed of calcium phosphate and/or carbonate with insoluble bilirubin pigment and cholesterol) or brown (about 5% of the total, composed of calcium bilirubinate, calcium palmitate, stearate and cholesterol ).

It should be noted that typically about 10% of people with gallstones respond to tauroursodeoxycholic acid. This treatment is suitable for people who are contraindicated for surgery and have small (5 mm or smaller in diameter) non-calcium gallstones that are high in cholesterol.

The dosage and course of administration are prescribed to everyone individually: as a prophylaxis after surgery with preservation of the gallbladder - based on ultrasound results, without surgery - based on the results of computed tomography.
